CPT must be integral to the curriculum
Authorization exists because the training is an integral part of an established curriculum — a required practicum, a credit-bearing internship, or a course whose learning outcomes the placement fulfills. A designated school official authorizes it and records it on the student's immigration record before work begins.
For an infrastructure program, that alignment is usually straightforward: a course in enterprise networking or cloud architecture maps cleanly onto a placement running switch refreshes, landing-zone builds, or identity migrations. The alignment must be documented, not assumed.
Authorization comes before the first hour worked
The single most common violation is starting work before the authorization is issued or outside the authorized date range. Infrastructure teams often want an engineer on a cutover weekend that lands days before the term begins; that convenience is not worth the status risk.
Authorization is also employer-specific and worksite-specific. A student who moves from one client engagement to another under a different employer needs a new authorization, and a change in hours between part-time and full-time requires an update.
The full-time CPT consideration
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates eligibility for optional practical training at the same educational level. Part-time CPT does not carry that consequence. Graduate students in systems programs are frequently offered full-time infrastructure roles and accept them without modeling the downstream effect on OPT and any later work-visa timeline.
Model the whole sequence before signing: term-by-term CPT hours, expected graduation, OPT window, and any STEM extension. A decision made in the second semester constrains options two years later.
What employers should verify
Ask for the authorization record covering the exact dates and worksite, confirm hours match what was authorized, and re-verify each term rather than each year. Keep the placement's technical scope consistent with the coursework described to the school.
Treat the school official as the authority on the student's academic side and immigration counsel as the authority on status questions. The employer's job is accurate, timely information and a placement that genuinely matches the described curriculum.
Key takeaways
- No work before the authorization dates — including a single cutover weekend.
- Authorization is employer- and worksite-specific; re-authorize when either changes.
- Twelve months of full-time CPT removes OPT eligibility at the same degree level.
- Re-verify authorization every term, not annually.
